I am always looking for engaging ways to keep the attention of my students during the weeks before Christmas break. But that’s not always an easy task so that's why I made this free no-prep Christmas song activity, inlcuding the lyrics to 7 Christmas songs that are related to winter and Santa.

Note: You know your district and students better than I do. I know not all schools and/or students celebrate Christmas, so use this activity accordingly.

This activity is recommended for students who are old enough to read and it is meant to be a quick, fun activity to target a variety of goal areas.

How to Structure Your Session:

Print off one page for each student. I either put each sheet in a dry-erase page protector* or give students a copy to mark up. Using just one song, I can differentiate my students' goals! For example, one student may be highlighting words containing their speech sound, then speaking them aloud into a whisper phone*. Another student may be reading one line at a time using fluency strategies. Another student may be using context clues to find the meaning of words the SLP highlighted. This is very easy to use with mixed groups!

How to Use the Songs:

  • Read aloud and highlight target sounds.

  • Race to see who can find & say the most target sounds in their song.

  • Race to see who can find ALL of their targeted sounds first.

  • Read the songs aloud in a variety of voices: serious/silly/Santa/elf/etc.

  • Read while practicing fluency techniques for smooth speech.

  • Use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words.

  • Pre-select vocabulary from the songs and find synonyms/antonyms.

Songs Included:

  • Deck the Halls

  • Jingle Bells

  • Jolly Old St. Nicolas

  • Toyland

  • Up On the Housetop

  • We Wish You a Merry Christmas

  • 12 Days of Christmas (shortened & full version)

Included on each page are the frequently occurring phonemes to target within each song. Almost every song is good for /s/ and /r/, even if it’s not listed!

This free activity is perfect for the last week before Christmas. Have fun. Sing or listen to carols. Laugh together.  Enjoy yourselves, and then have a wonderful Christmas break!
