As an all-star advocate, you are always ready to stand up for your profession and your students! You're the go-to SLP when a colleague is stuck in a predicament and needs help looking objectively at the situation.

You've likely had a conversation or two (or three, or four...) with teachers about making sure your students are receiving the services they need and deserve to be successful. You know how to get your point across effectively and efficiently, and do not hesitate to stand up for what is right.

Advocating is HARD WORK and it doesn't always make you the most popular person because you're speaking the hard truths that some people don't want to hear. But by doing the hard work, you're showing how strongly you want to ensure the highest possible outcomes for your profession and students... and that's something to be proud of!

Quote to live by: “Never be afraid to raise your voice for honesty and truth and compassion against injustice and lying and greed. If people all over the world...would do this, it would change the earth.” - William Faulkner

Here are some resources that may interest you as an all-star advocate:

  • SLP Now has a podcast where I guest spoke over advocating at the local, state, and national level. You can listen here!
  • ASHA has an advocacy section on their website where you can learn how to get involved! One of the best ways to get involved is to join your state organization - believe it or not, that's where you'll make the biggest changes!
  • If you're a subscriber of SpeechPathology.com, they have a great course called How to Advocate for Students with IEPs through Professional Role Empowerment Strategies. If you're not a member, join using the affiliate code KAYLASLP to get a free bonus month added to your subscription (so you'll get 13 months for $99). Trust me when I say this membership pays for itself over and over again.
Be sure to check out these resources because I have no doubt they're exactly what you're looking for. Keep on advocating, friend!
